Sound Bites - Reuse & Recycling

Sound Bites is commited to reducing waste. Here are some of the things we do to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Aluminium Although recycling facilities for aluminium drinks cans are increasingly available collection points for the recycling of aluminium foil are still few and far between. Aluminium is extracted in open pits and huge areas of rain forest have been destroyed to mine it. Sound Bites acts as a city centre aluminium foil collection point. We take the foil to the recycling centre on the corner of Lodge Lane and Bridge Street so if you live on that side of town you could take it there directly. Otherwise bring it in to Sound Bites and we'll happily recycle it for you. Please check our guidelines to be sure you are bringing the right stuff.

Biodegradable Packaging Sound Bites packs down the majority of the wholefoods we sell as well as some of our cakes, flapjacks and pasties. We use biodegradable cellophane packaging for this. We also use paper pots for the salads sold at the deli counter and for our soup.

Cardboard The bulk of the waste that Sound Bites generates is cardboard (approximately 4 times the quantity of general waste). We are lucky to have two volunteers who take the cardboard for recycling for us on alternate weeks. Without their help we would produce a lot more rubbish. If you have a large car or van and would be prepared to help out with this occassionally we'd be very glad to hear from you.

Plastic Bags We have never bought new plastic bags to give away in the shop. We encourage customers to bring their own shopping bag from home. But if you forget, there are several options for sale: sturdy paper bags for 20p, fair trade cotton shopping bags for £1, or beautiful red jute bags for £3.50.

Refill Scheme Sound Bites runs a refill scheme for several household cleaning products. Bring in your empty BioD Washing Up Liquid bottles, BioD Fabric Softner bottles or any 1 litre or 1.5litre Laundry Liquid bottles and we'll refill them for you. We use Clearspring Laundry Liquid for the refill scheme. All these products are biodegradable free from animal products and are not tested on animals. Refills are slightly cheaper than new bottles so there is a financial incentive as well as an eco one!

Further Information Sound Bites takes no credit for this, but visitors to this page may be interested to know about some new recycling facilities in Derby making it possible to recycle Tetra Paks and Batteries. Tetra Paks can now be recycled at Asda in Sinfin, Tesco's in Mickelover, Sainsburys at Kingsway and the Wyvern and at Raynesway. (Don't forget you don't have to shop in the supermarket when you use their recycling facilities!) There is now also a brown bin at Raynesway for battery recycling and you can take aluminum foil there too!

If you have a blue wheelie bin you can now put Tetra Paks in there too.
