Beers from Pitfield Brewery and Marble Beers Organic brewers are not common, but, like organic growers, are almost exclusively passionate, dedicated and principled individuals. And there is an extensive range from two of the best in Sound Bites – as well as other interesting if quirky surprises.
Manchester Marble beers are comparatively young. The brewery converted to full Soil Association organic status in 2000, earning Vegan Society approval too as they ditched all fishy additions to the brew. It was only last year that they started to bottle their superb cask ales, tweaking recipes to suit bottle-conditioned demands. “Ginger Marble”, featured at the Derby Winter festival in its 4.5% cask form, is “Ginger 6” at 6% in bottles – the definitive ginger beer! Lagonda I.P.A (5%) and Chocolate Marble (5.5%) – in superb cask form at the Babington Arms Marble weekend – are the other beers currently available at Sound Bites. An E.S.B. style “Tawny Ale” (5.7%) is eagerly awaited, after its 2 months of dry-hopping, in April. Marble brewer, James Campbell, is a perfectionist in the trade – one of the younger generation of master brewers, and one of the best. There is more. You will also find Lincolnshire/ Yorkshire brewed organic fruit beers – Cherry Ale and Strawberry Ale (5.1%) – intriguing Belgian-style creations from Sam Smiths fiercely independent Tadcaster brewery. For cider/ perry drinkers there is also a range from Herefordshire organic cidery, Dunkertons: Black Fox cider (7%), Dry cider (7%) and their delightful Perry (7.5%). It’s not scrumpy, but they are true craft-brewed products. Come in to check out some “real ale in a bottle” you won’t find anywhere else in Derby!
